CHAPTER 6

TAME THE EGO (THE FOURTH KEY)

The fourth key to higher awareness is so important that it requires its own chapter. It is “tame the ego,” and it flows directly from the first three keys. After you banish the doubt, you learn to have a knowing rather than a belief about things. Then you are able to attain the perspective of the witness, noticing what’s happening in a dispassionate way. In the process, you learn that cultivating the witness is best done in silence.

The ego works really hard at keeping you from that Divine place of a quiet mind, making you believe that there is nothing of value to you in silence. More than anything else, the ego is into self-preservation, and it will say things to you like, “I can’t believe you’re now allowing yourself to fall for all of this nonsense.” “All of this nonsense” simply refers to your understanding that it is time to listen to your higher awareness. As you remove the doubt, cultivate the witness, and shut down the inner dialogue, you are preventing the ego from interfering in the daily decision-making of your life.

In this chapter, we’ll learn some more about the ego, so we can clearly understand that which we need to tame.
